How to choose your Grade 10 subjects

October 20, 2026

At the end of Grade 9 you choose the subjects you will take to matric. It can feel like a huge decision, and it is an important one, but you can make it calmly if you follow a few steps.

1. Start with possible careers

Write down two or three careers or study areas you might like, then look up the subjects they need. Engineering and most sciences need Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Many health programmes need Life Sciences. Commerce degrees often need Mathematics.

2. Be honest about your strengths

Look at the subjects you do well in and enjoy. You will spend three years on them, so interest matters as much as marks.

3. Keep options open

If you are unsure what you want to do, keeping Mathematics rather than Mathematical Literacy usually keeps more doors open, as long as you can cope with the work.

4. Talk to people

Ask your teachers, your life orientation teacher and people in jobs you are curious about. Take our career quiz for ideas.
